Ubuntu Installation Guide

If you’re looking to install Ubuntu on your computer, this guide will walk you through the basic steps. Ubuntu is a popular Linux distribution that is user-friendly and great for both beginners and experienced users.

What You’ll Need

• A computer where you want to install Ubuntu
• A USB flash drive with at least 4GB of space
• A working internet connection (optional but helpful)
• Ubuntu ISO file, which you can download from the official Ubuntu website

Step 1: Download the Ubuntu ISO

Head over to ubuntu.com/download and download the latest version of the Ubuntu ISO file. Choose the desktop version, which is suitable for most users.

Step 2: Create a Bootable USB Drive

Once you have the ISO file, you need to create a bootable USB to install Ubuntu from. You can use free tools like Rufus (Windows), balenaEtcher (Windows/Mac/Linux), or the Startup Disk Creator if you already have a Linux system.

• Insert your USB drive.
• Open your chosen tool, select the Ubuntu ISO file, and the USB drive.
• Click "Start" or "Flash" and wait for the process to finish.

Step 3: Boot from the USB Drive

Restart your computer with the USB drive plugged in. You may need to press a key to enter the boot menu (common keys are F12, F2, ESC, or DEL) immediately after the computer starts to turn on. Select the USB drive from the boot options.

Step 4: Try or Install Ubuntu

Once Ubuntu loads, you’ll see an option to either “Try Ubuntu” or “Install Ubuntu.” “Try Ubuntu” lets you run it from the USB without making changes to your computer. If you’re ready, choose “Install Ubuntu.”

Step 5: Follow the Installation Wizard

The installation process will ask you a few things:

• Keyboard layout: Select your keyboard settings.
• Updates and other software: It’s usually best to install updates during the process if you have internet access.
• Installation type: You can install Ubuntu alongside your existing OS, erase the disk and install Ubuntu, or do something else if you want custom partitions. Be careful: erasing the disk will delete everything on it.
• Time zone: Pick your location for accurate time settings.

Step 6: Set Up Your User Account

Enter your name, computer name, username, and password. You can also choose if you want to log in automatically or require the password every time.
