Philosophy of Life: A Journey Through Existentialism

A Journey Through Existentialism

In the quiet moments of life, have you ever paused to wonder what it all means? Why do we strive and struggle through our days, often feeling like mere marionettes in a grand play where the script is ever-changing? Existentialism, as a philosophy, throws us into the deep end of questioning our very existence. It’s not just for philosophers in stuffy rooms; it’s a mirror to our everyday lives.

Picture this: a young man, lost in the bustle of a city. He walks past towering buildings, the bright lights illuminating faces of passersby, yet he feels completely alone. This feeling, is it not something we all experience at some point? Existentialists like Jean-Paul Sartre argued that existence precedes essence, which basically means we are all born without a purpose. Instead, it’s up to us to create meaning in our lives. But here lies the rub—what if you create a meaning that nobody else understands, or worse, what if it turns out to be just an illusion?

Often, people chase after the notion of happiness, compelled by societal norms and expectations. You wake up, go to work, return home, rinse and repeat. But where does that lead? To a routine that may or may not resonate with our true desires. Albert Camus, another pivotal figure in existentialism, described life as an absurd quest. He proposed that we must embrace this absurdity, accepting the lack of inherent meaning, rather than driving ourselves mad searching for it. Are we just players in a cosmic joke, or does true joy lie in recognising the absurd?

And then there’s the idea of authenticity—a core tenet of existential thought. To live authentically means confronting the existential dread head-on. It means shedding the false selves we often wear to fit in or be accepted. Imagine the liberation that comes from waking up one day and deciding to be unapologetically yourself, to dance like no one’s watching, to love without fear of rejection. But how many of us actually dare to peel back the layers, risking vulnerability for the sake of being genuine? It’s daunting, isn’t it?

Existentialism doesn’t provide easy answers; rather, it presents us with questions that rattle the very foundations of our beliefs. What if the meaning of life isn’t to be found outside of us, but within? What if our happiness doesn’t come from achieving societal accolades, but rather from simply being? The essence of every existential encounter is to engage with these inquiries, to grapple with them as we navigate our limited time on this earth.

So, as we go about our busy lives, perhaps we should take a moment to step back. What kind of life are we truly living? Are we existing, or merely living? The journey of existentialism invites us to ponder these thoughts, urging us toward a path of self-discovery, even if it’s a messy one filled with missteps and doubts. After all, isn’t it in the questions that we might discover the most profound aspects of our own humanity?
